Diversity values and concepts are embedded in the vision, mission, core values, and credo of the Sam M. Walton College of Business. It is the educational value of diversity that is most important to us as a learning organization. It is crucial that our students are prepared to be productive members of the global society in which they will live and work. The Walton College is committed to increasing students’ awareness of diversity and increasing the extent to which they value its significance. Therefore, we hold ourselves responsible for achieving these goals by including them in the statements of who we are as an organization.
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion was developed in 1994 to support, advocate and assist the Walton College in developing plans for diversity throughout the college.
The Sam M. Walton College of Business is a nationally competitive business school that combines excellent student learning experiences with quality research serving Arkansas and the world.
We believe that without embracing diversity values, we cannot serve “Arkansas and the world”.
Diversity values are embedded in the “teaching” portion of the College’s mission statement. It reads as follows:
Educate a diverse population of students in bachelors, masters, and doctoral programs to be tomorrow’s business, community, and academic leaders.
The faculty and staff have adopted core values of excellence, professionalism, innovation, and collegiality. The collegiality core value is expressed as:
We believe in working together to examine situations and ideas from diverse perspectives.
As a more extensive statement of shared values, the faculty and staff developed a credo which, in part, states:
We must celebrate and pursue diversity that strengthens our social fabric, and we must continually do all that we can to enrich not only the communities in which we live and work but also the world community to which we all belong.
