Study Abroad- Economics
The Walton College has a wide range of study abroad experiences for its students with programs in Brazil, Japan, China, Mexico, and Italy, to name a few. You will visit multinational companies such as Petrobras, Boeing, Sanyo, Wal-Mart Brazil, Toyota Motor Company, Mazda, Kawasaki, Kirin, NEC, and Daiwa Steel. Each study abroad program also offers unique insights into the cultures of the respective countries. Understanding culture is a prerequisite for doing business and these environments and each program integrates economics, business, culture, politics, and history to provide a deep understanding of the country. Cultural sites in Brazil include the Imperial Palace, museums, and of course the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. In Japan visits may include Hiroshima, Buddhist Temples, Hemiji Castle, Shinto Shrines, Matsuri Festivals and Hiezan Temple.
"Community Development in a Global Context: An International Service Learning Program"
Students in economics or business will participate in a variety of projects including community economic development and curriculum development in local schools. This program will provide students with the insight into the economic, business, political, and cultural environment and trends in Brazil. During the four- week program students will be introduced to the key issues in the Brazilian/ American economic and business relationship. Instruction will include both classroom and extramural activities. Guest lecturers will be from the business, academic, and the political community. The course will be taught in English and guided by the UA faculty. There will also be field trips to businesses, cultural and historical sites, and government institutions. The program includes a 10 hour preparatory instruction at UA, giving students a backgroud in Brazil's current business, political, and cultural environment as well as some baisc communication in Portuguese.

This course is designed to immerse the student in a living classroom experience with the Japanese Economic System. The Japan Study Abroad Program is taught in English by Dr. Robert Stapp of the Walton College of Business. Students will have audiences with top executives of multinational companies such as Sanyo, Toyota Motor Company, Mazda, Sharp, Kirin, NEC, Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding, Daiwa Steel, Oyatsu along with various attaches of the US Embassy in Tokyo among others. Students will also visit the Arkansas Economic Development Commission. Cultural activities will include Rice Planting, Pottery, a Hanshin Tigers Baseball game, and martial arts such as Kendo (the way of the sword) and Kyudo (the way of the bow and arrow), Kodo (world renowned Taiko Drum Group) and Hibi Elementary School. Students will also have three nights of home stays with a Japanese family. Students will visit sites such as the Golden Pavilion, the Peace Park in Hiroshima, Todaij(the largest all-wood structure in the world housing the largest Buddha statue in Japan), Shinto Shrines, Himeji Castle, Matsuri Festivals and Hiezan Temple will be explored. We will visit the following cities: Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Toyota City, Tamano City, Kameoka, Tokyo, Takayama and Sapporo.
