Constituent Relations

Constituent (donor) relations is not new. Saying "thank you," recognizing donors on walls and in lists, and telling donors how gifts have been used have been part of the development process for years. However, in recent years- with the demand for accountability and campaigns to fill the gap as other sources of revenue and state support are shrinking- these activities have been given an increased level of importance.

Stewardship - acknowledging, recognizing, and reporting back to the donor on the use of a gift- is vital to establish credibility, build trust and confidence, and thus, brings the donor closer to the college and university. The Constituent Relations team, consisting of a directorevents and programs manager, and external relations coordinator, focuses on building long-term, productive relationships and loyalty through a program of recognition, stewardship, engagement and communication that encourages personal involvement and giving.

Two other activities critical to effective donor relations are communication and involvement or engagement. Building a relationship requires involvement, whether through communications (mail, phone, social media, face-to-face, etc) or activities (events, boards, alumni society, etc.). The Walton College Alumni Society is one avenue to meaningful involvement opportunities and building relationships that will result in future supporters and major gifts.
