Professor Burton has published more than seventy-five refereed journal articles in outlets such as the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Research, Public Opinion Quarterly, American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Management, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Educational and Psychological Measurement, and others.
Professor Burton has received a number of awards for his research and teaching. In 2001, he received the Arkansas Alumni Association Award for Research, a university-wide award for overall contributions in research. In 2005 and 2001, he received the best "All Around" faculty award for the Walton College for his combined contributions in instruction, research, and service. In 1995, Burton received the Phillips 66 Faculty Excellence in Research Award for the College of Business. He was chosen for the International Society of Business Disciplines Faculty Teaching Excellence Award in 2006 in a national competition. He has served as a consultant for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics where he proposed modifications to the Current Employment Survey and Current Population Survey, the measurement instruments used as input for the Consumer Price Index and the U.S. unemployment rate. He has been listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Emerging Leaders of America, and has been awarded grants from the Marketing Science Institute and University and College grants from LSU and the U of A. Burton has served on the Editorial Review Boards of the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Business Research and the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing and he has served as a Co-Chair for the Marketing and Public Policy Conference.
After completing his MBA from the University of Texas (Austin), Professor Burton was employed by Texas Commerce Bank, a twelve billion dollar bank holding company located in Houston, Texas. There, he was Vice-President in charge of Consumer Research and New Product Development. He also served as an Assistant and Associate Professor of Marketing at Louisiana State University prior to joining the Sam M. Walton College of Business faculty.
