Welcome to the Writing Center!

The Writing Center is here to assist you as a Walton College student with all your communication (written and oral) needs. Our graduate and peer tutors are trained to teach you how to revise, edit, and proofread your papers; to teach you how to incorporate the use of visuals into your argument; and to teach you to organize your written documents by implementing typography. Our goal isn't to change a paper; it's to help you become a better communicator - something that will serve you far beyond your college career.

What should you bring to your meeting?

  • Any handouts that your professor has given to you that relate to your project
  • Your sources, notes, or any other related materials
  • Resources for taking notes

Some Added Information:

We encourage students to make appointments either using the scheduling software program or by calling the writing center at 479-575-5211.

  • If your paper is 15 pages or more, you must upload the paper two days prior to your appointment so that the tutor has time to read it before you arrive.
  • We're happy to see you for walk-in appointments as well as scheduled appointments, but we can't guarantee a tutor will be available, especially during the busiest parts of the semester.
  • If you are collaborating on a project, you must notify the writing center at least three days in advance so we can reserve a room that will accommodate your group
  • Sometimes, just beginning a paper is difficult.  We're happy to help you with that, too.

Services that we offer

  • One-on-one tutoring in person
  • On-line tutoring
  • Group tutoring
  • Workshops
  • Writing support for faculty

How does this work?

When you meet with your tutor, he or she will ask you a few questions about your project. Usually, your tutor will ask you what you feel your needs are as far as writing and those needs will be addressed. If you have something created, the tutor may read your paper out loud; hearing your paper will help you locate the areas that need work.

Some possible questions that the tutor may ask:

  • Have you satisfied the assignment's expectations?
  • Is the argument supported?
  • Have you followed the specific form for the type of project you have been assigned?
  • Are your paragraphs unified, cohesive, and developed?
  • Does your draft use effective transitions?
  • Have you incorporated sources effectively?
  • Have you followed the rules for citation?

At some point, you or your tutor may talk about editing issues such as grammar, usage, and punctuation. If you are having editing issues, we will gladly work with you by demonstrating the correct usage, pointing you to handouts that we have on our website, and/or referring you to a writing sourcebook, but we are not editors and will not edit your papers—that would be cheating.

Borrowing the Writing Center's Resource Books:

While we do not mind you using our resource books, they are not to be taken outside of the writing center.
